There are many ways to enjoy the last days of HBO’s Succession. One way is through the lens of luxury real estate, which is why penthouses, townhouses, compounds and castles are top of mind for ultra-wealthy people and family office members.

An index of prime prices in 46 cities declined 0.4% year over year, the first drop since 2009, according to the real estate consultancy Knight Frank. That’s a sharp reversal from 10% growth seen in the fourth quarter of 2021.

In 2019, it was possible to rent a 4,430-square-foot prime apartment in Miami for $2,000 a week. By the end of 2022, the same amount of money would get you 2,200 square feet, or about 50% less space.

New York again topped the list of the world’s wealthiest cities, boasting some 340,000 millionaires last year, according to the investment migration firm Henley & Partners.

From new condos developers are eager to get off their books to townhouses listed on and off for years, sellers’ growing willingness to cut prices is helping lure buyers to the negotiating table, real estate agents across the borough say.
