The family office space is filled with interesting people who have access to many facets of the world because of the nature of the business. These renaissance men and women like to stay curious about a range of subjects spanning the arts and sciences. In this column, we ask three simple questions to industry heavyweights: What are you reading, watching and listening to?
April Rudin is the founder and CEO of The Rudin Group, a global wealth marketing firm, and a thought leadership columnist for Crain Currency.
What are you reading?
Unfortunately, I spend most of my time reading my own emails! But in my spare time, I like to read magazines of all sorts, including Vanity Fair, Fortune, Wired, Fast Company and occasionally People.
As for books, I am in the process of writing my own book for Wiley Global on opportunities in global wealth management. One book that really sparked my interest is Move: Where People Are Going for A Better Future by Parag Khanna. All of his books are fascinating, including The Future is Asian.
What are you watching?
I am literally obsessed with everything by author Harlan Coben on Netflix! It started with the series "Fool Me Once," and then I went down a rabbit hole and found many more miniseries adapted from his books. They are the types of addicting murder mysteries that are truly binge-worthy!
Another one of my guilty pleasures is "Shark Tank," which I could watch every day and learn something new as an entrepreneur myself. Whether it is watching the entrepreneurs and the way products/services are pitched or how the "sharks" dig into each investment, I find it endlessly enjoyable and learn something from each episode. Spoiler alert: if you watch old episodes, you can Google the firms to see how successful/or lack thereof that they've been!
What are you listening to?
Since I grew up in Detroit, there's really only one type of music: Motown. Our "boss" is Bob Seger and not Bruce Somebody.
True confession: While we have produced plenty of client podcasts, I have never listened to any on my own, nor do I subscribe to any.
