Homeowners have paused on major remodeling due to inflation boosting costs for materials and labor, but things have calmed down in the past year, and now might be a good time to take on such a project, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The national average for a bathroom remodel is $24,606, according to Zonda, a residential construction data analyst. But it has become easier to negotiate lower labor costs now since competition for contractors has declined, and material prices have decreased over the past year.

And if you’re feeling like you need to treat yourself, the sky’s the limit. One couple spent more than $143,000 to remodel the bathroom in their Bel-Air home – creating a 170-square-foot suite out of a dressing room and bathroom that includes a walk-in closet, a shower/tub room, plus a higher ceiling. Features that cost more were $7,000 for a wall-size shower door and $7,100 for black polished-nickel taps.

“When you walk in, it feels really calming, designer Lisa Kanegae told The Journal.
